Club Secretary Alan Evans writes:
THE SEASON SO FAR!
I think most players have now decided who they want to play for and which team, so we can now get on with running a club that EVERYONE should want to play for.
All players who sign to play for Fishponds Old Boys, should accept being picked for any team on their ability to be able to perform for that team at that level, and nothing else.
The first team seemed to have been carrying on from most of last season in losing by the odd goal. Chris and Ian were particularly disappointed because defeats at home to South Glos. and Old Georgians and at Avonmouth should all have netted some points, which meant we were in an all too familiar position - at the bottom.
However the last few results have been more encouraging with a hard fought 3-3 draw at Ashton United, after being in the lead 2-0 at one stage, and a thumping 4-0 win at home to Stoke Gifford, Sam Payne again showing what an assett he is by scoring a hat trick. Despite a set back at CTK, losing 2-1 after being leading 1-0 until the final minutes, the team bounced back with a welcome 4-1 win at old rivals Glenside to keep them firmly at the bottom, pushing us up to a more respectable position
The new signings have fitted in well, more about them next time, and it is good to see Nick Lee back after his injury. Josh Sargent, unfortunately has a while to go yet before his return, but his brother Luke has been a capable deputy. Jack Payne and Lee Slateford prove a solid barrier when they are both playing, Pat Watson, Danny Yeomans and Mike Pullin are again ever present in the team. Unfortunately it seems as if Darren Coole cannot commit himself to Saturday football so we have lost a valuable member of the team.
The second and thirds have struggled most of the season, being the teams who have suffered from players moving on to other clubs or moving up the teams at the club. The managers continue to work hard to try to recruit new players without much success - it's up to you players to attract players who can improve the standards at the club. Certainly we are not the worst teams in the divisions, what we want is more consistency and a little more effort on the pitch from all of the players.
The fourth team continue to surprise everyone and have only suffered one defeat so far. They are in the last sixteen of the GFA Primary cup which they will play at home to Stoke Rangers on December 5th.
With an average age of well over 35 they have shown that there is no substitute for experience, and where they have struggled for fitness in a few games, they have still managed to keep the lead, and have put themselves in second position in the league.
